1 in 10 men will experience pelvic health symptoms during their lifetime, including a prevalence of over 50% for sexual function issues in men over 50.
These issues can develop at any age, and men can find it very difficult to obtain help and treatment.
Symptoms may include problems with:
- Bladder dysfunction- leaking with urgency, leaking when coughing, sneezing exercising, dribbling after visiting the toilet or even throughout the day. Difficulty emptying the bladder.
- Bowel dysfunction- accidental leakage of faeces and/or wind, loose stools. Difficulty emptying the bowels, feelings of incomplete emptying, constipation.
- Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction (difficulty achieving or maintaining erection, as well as reduced quality of erection and sensation), premature ejaculation and painful ejaculation.
- Persistent pelvic pain in the lower back, buttocks, tailbone, groin, abdomen, penis, scrotum e.g. chronic prostatitis, pudendal neuralgia
Prostate surgery is a common cause of bladder leakage and erectile dysfunction in men, up to 70% of men suffer from urinary incontinence afterwards. Pelvic floor rehabilitation and education can help reduce the incidence of bladder problems following this surgery.
Our physiotherapist will not complete an internal examination, however they can use trans peroneal ultrasound to assess the pelvic floor and anal sphincter control.
